FTL (Science Fiction and Physics)
Although impossible by our best current understanding of physics, FTL is often used in Science Fiction as a way to make space travel stories workable given the vast distances between stars.
Breaks down into three types:
Hypespace Travel through a different dimension which (presumably) has different laws of physics which allow for travel that is faster then is possible in our space. Ex. Star Wars, Babylon 5
Warp Drive Travel made possible by modifying the physical properties of the space we live in. Ex. Star Trek
Folding Space Travel to a distant point without going through the space in-between. Ex. Dune, any travel through a worm hole.
